《Understanding Diarrhea》

August 24, 2026

Diarrhea means having three or more loose stools in a day. It can be mild or, in some cases, become life-threatening. Here are three examples to help explain:

The first example is a young child who had a common viral infection with a runny nose and fever for two days. The symptoms went away after simple rehydration therapy. In the second example, a middle-aged woman had fevers, fatigue, and diarrhea for up to three weeks. After a full medical check, she was diagnosed with intestinal tuberculosis and fully recovered after TB treatment. The third example is a 45-year-old man who had diarrhea for three months. After a colonoscopy, he was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease.

In these three examples, all had diarrhea, but the main difference is how long it lasted. The first case had diarrhea for only two days, while the last case had it for more than a month.

In general, diarrhea can be acute, persistent, or chronic.

Acute diarrhea lasts less than two weeks and is often caused by viruses like rotavirus or norovirus. It usually gets better on its own with supportive care. Persistent diarrhea lasts more than two weeks but less than 30 days. Chronic diarrhea lasts more than 30 days and can be a sign of serious health problems like inflammatory bowel disease or bowel cancer.

What causes diarrhea?

There are some symptoms and signs to watch for if you have diarrhea, such as:
· Food intolerance
· Food poisoning & Infections
· Traveler's diarrhea
· Medications and certain medical conditions such as hyperthyroidism
· Irritable bowel syndrome
· Inflammatory bowel disease

If you have any of the following symptoms, please seek urgent medical attention:
· Profuse Diarrhea
· Bloody stools with stomach cramps.
· Signs of severe dehydration, such as:
o Reduced Consciousness
o Lethargy
o Dizziness
o Rapid Breathing
o Rapid Heartbeat
o Sunken Eyes
o Reduced Urine Output

How well treatment works depends on the cause of the diarrhea. The main goal is to find the cause. Usually, diarrhea is not serious if it lasts less than one or two days. In these cases, vital signs stay stable, and the body stays well hydrated. But if diarrhea continues, you should see your healthcare provider for further tests and treatment.
