Are you experiencing constipation?
Everyone has different bowel habits. Most people have a bowel movement once a day, but some go two or three times a day, and for others, two or three times a week is still normal.
Constipation usually means having dry, hard stools and going to the bathroom less often than usual. You might also feel like you haven’t fully emptied your bowels. When these symptoms happen together, we call it constipation.
So, what are the main causes of constipation?
1. Not getting enough fiber or fluids. Busy schedules can make it easy to forget these important habits.
2. Not being active enough. Without regular movement, your gut slows down and stools can get stuck.
3. Some medical conditions, like pregnancy, bowel cancer, or hypothyroidism, can also cause constipation.
4. Some medications, such as iron supplements, can lead to constipation.
Constipation happens when stool stays in the large intestine for too long. When this happens, the body absorbs more fluid from the stool, making it hard and dry. This makes it even harder to pass. Constipation can also be linked to an imbalance in the gut microbiome, known as dysbiosis. This means the healthy bacteria in your gut, like Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium, are out of balance, which can make you more likely to get infections or feel unwell.
If you have constipation, watch out for these warning signs:
· Severe abdominal pain
· Bloody diarrhea
· Weight loss
· Vomiting
If you notice any of these symptoms, please see your doctor or a healthcare professional.
How can you manage constipation?
1. Eat foods that are high in fiber.
Examples include whole grains, oats, fruits, and vegetables. Fiber adds bulk to your stool and helps it hold more water, making it easier and smoother to pass.
2. Take probiotic supplements.
You can also try probiotics like Bifidobacterium or Lactobacillus. These healthy bacteria help keep your gut microbiome balanced.
3. Drink enough water every day.
Along with eating fiber and taking probiotics, remember to drink enough fluids. Most healthy people should aim for 2 to 3 liters a day, but your needs may vary. If you have heart or kidney problems, check with your doctor about how much fluid is safe for you.
4. Exercise regularly.
Regular physical activity also helps your gut work better. Let’s work on building regular bowel habits!
